CalTime

Time Keeping Portal - UC Berkeley

As a part-time student employee who works on campus, I found the experienc with Caltime's portal to be frustrating. It turns out that I wasn't alone, as many other Caltime employees also disliked the portal. To address this issue, I decided to come up with an alternative solution and redesign the user experience to make it easier for everyone who uses the service.

Current CalTime Interface - Not Responsive

Research

Users with multiple jobs often have difficulty accurately logging in and out on CalTime

Users dislike timecard corrections due to the need for other communication methods and potential payment issues.

Users hate that every time they try to login they need to go through the SSO portal and authenticate using DUO

People prefer to view their bi-weekly earnings on their timecard instead of visiting the UCPath payment website.

User Flow

Current User Flow

Upon analyzing the essentials, it was observed that the current user flow was very linear, leading to significant frustration among users. It was imperative to redesign the user flow to improve the experience.

Proposed User Flow

Design Breakdown

Task Centric Design

Breaking down user tasks to understand navigation requirements and product architecture.

Clocking In/Out

Be able to clock In/Out of multiple jobs.

Time card corrections

Ability to suggest time corrections with supervisor and track them.

Scheduling work

Adjusting daily work hours, clocking out early, setting reminders and scheduling.

How do we help people do these more effectively and efficiently ?

Timestamp exploration

TimeStamp is a simple time tracker. It lets users clock in and out of their part time job. Users are expected to clock in when they begin working and clock out when they are done with their shift.

Designing the ideal clock-in/out interaction involves creating an intuitive, confusion-free UI that allows for immediate, thoughtless user action.

Timecard Corrections

Corrections, added by user request to CalTime, streamline resolving timecard issues and missed punches directly on the platform, eliminating the need for external communication and expediting payment resolutions.

Final Artifact

Miscellaneoius

Born from our collective frustration, CalTime became a passion project. While not yet live, we've pitched it to the university's CalNet team for consideration. Meanwhile, our user study with 30 participants has yielded promising insights, underscoring CalTime's potential to enhance daily experiences.
